Former Business School Dean, B. Joseph White, To Head Fred Alger
Management in New York
(Excerpts taken from personal communication on
1/25/03.)
In a letter to the University of
Michigan Business School faculty and staff, former Business School
Dean, Joe White, announced that he will be leaving Ann Arbor to
head Fred Alger Management in New York City. His letter is as
follows:
"I write to let you know about an upcoming change Mary and I will
be making.
I have accepted an invitation from Fred Alger, an alumnus of the
Business School, to head the firm that bears his name, Fred Alger
Management Company, as its Managing Director. Alger is an
investment company with a family of mutual funds and pension,
endowment, and other funds under management. The firm's investment
offices are at 111 5th Avenue in New York City.I will join
Alger on February 1, 2003 and will be on leave from the University
as of that date. I have several University obligations in the next
several months that I will fulfill, including teaching a course in
our Executive MBA program in the spring.
Mary and I will continue to have a home in Ann Arbor though we
will relocate to New York. |
|
 |
There is some history among Alger, the University of Michigan
Business School and myself. Fred Alger founded the firm forty years ago.
He and his brother David Alger (also a UMBS alumnus, a member of the
School’s Visiting Committee, and the recipient of the Alumni Achievement
Award) built a successful firm through a record of strong investment
performance and excellent client service. I have been a trustee of the
Alger mutual funds for several years.
For much of the last decade, David Alger led the firm. Its investment
offices were located on the 93rd floor of 1 World Trade Center. David
Alger, Meredith Whalen (a recent UMBS BBA graduate), Ted Adderley (the
son of Terence Adderley, a business school graduate and member of the
Visiting Committee) and 30 other members of the Alger firm died
tragically in the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. Fred Alger
returned to active leadership of the firm to rebuild its human capital,
which he has done.
Fred has asked me to assume overall responsibility for Fred Alger
Management Company, reporting to him. I am honored by his trust and
welcome this new professional challenge
I have been a member of the University of Michigan Business School
community for over thirty years as a student, faculty member, and dean.
I thank all of you for the privilege of being your colleague and for the
pleasure of having worked together to build an excellent business
school. I look forward to great things from the University of Michigan
Business School and to our continuing friendship."
To send congratulatory and best wishes to Joe, you can email him at

Alumni in India Welcome the University of Michigan India Alumni
Association
 |
|
Alumni in India have had a lot to do recently,
since the creation of the University of Michigan India Alumni
Association late last year. While the club is open to all alumni
of the University of Michigan, Business School alumni have taken
the lead in its formation.
Under the guidance of Bharat Patel (MBA '69), Chairman, Procter
& Gamble India and with the assistance of Krishna Ramanathan (MBA
’93), and Ashish Khemka (BBA ’99), the club is especially eager to
draw on the strengths and knowledge of its business graduates.
In November, 2002, the Business School participated in the World
MBA Tour for the first time in India. The Business School
information exhibit during the World MBA Tour received a very
positive response at stops in New Delhi and Bombay. |
In addition, due to the initiative of our alumni and the support of
Citigroup, the Business School held receptions for alumni and
prospective students in New Delhi and at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay.
Alumni hosts Atul Bahadur (MBA '87) in New Delhi and Bahrat Patel (MBA
'69) and Ashish Khemka (BBA '99) in Bombay arranged the receptions where
over 100 prospective UMBS Indian students were guests.
On January 11, 2003, the University of Michigan India Alumni
Association (UMIAA) hosted Dean Bob Dolan and Professors C.K. Prahalad
and Wayne Brockbank for its first formal event, a debate entitled “The
Emerging Competitive Landscape: Our Need to Build New Capabilities.”
More than 200 people (and approximately 50 Michigan Business alumni)
attended the discussion, which was held at the Taj-President Hotel in
Mumbai.
Going forward, the club hopes to build on the momentum generated from
this event, which attracted a great deal of attention from local print
and TV media. One of the primary goals of the club is to raise the
profile of the University of Michigan (including the Business School) in
India.
To learn more about the UMIAA and its upcoming events, contact Ashish
Khemka at
khemka_ashish@hotmail.com.

clubs, please see the article, "Alumni Club Update: International Clubs
Are an Important Connection," in the Business School/U-M News section of

Alumni in the News
Blue Genes: Jim Callahan (MBA2) and Mike Callahan (MBA '67)
(Excerpts taken from the Monroe Street Journal online at
http://www.themsj.com.)
A parent wishes the best life experience for their children,
which includes a good education. It's a special occasion when a child
chooses a parent's alma mater and follows a similar course of study.
Jim Callahan (MBA2) now walks the same Davidson halls as his dad did 35
years ago. Michael (Mike) Callahan graduated from the Business School with
an MBA in 1967.
No family pressure was needed for Jim to apply to Michigan, as he was
raised in a Maize 'n Blue household. |
|
 |
Jim's aunt could be credited for the family's Michigan lineage. Mike recalls,
"I would visit my older sister while she was in school at Michigan; and I was
very impressed with the school. I knew that's where I wanted to attend someday."

Contract Counsel Identified as One of American's Fastest Growing Companies
by Inc 500 Magazine
(Excerpts taken from Contract Counsel press release dated
January 15, 2003.)
Contract Counsel, based in Madison Heights, Michigan, has been named one of
America's entrepreneurial growth leaders by Inc Magazine, which released its
2002 Inc 500 ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies. Contract
Counsel is the only legal staffing company in the country to be included in the
Inc 500 and one of only ten companies in Michigan to be recognized this year.
To make the Inc 500 list, Contract Counsel outpaced the legal staffing
industry and achieved a 622 percent growth rate over the past five years.
David Galbenski (BBA '90), President of Contract Counsel stated, "We are honored
to be included in the 2002 Inc 500. We continually challenge the status quo to
deliver a service level and customer experience that exceeds expectations. We
believe our focus on transforming the legal services industry and modeling
pre-eminence in all we do is the key to our continued success.

A New Partnership with Bloomberg L.P.
(Excerpts taken from the January 31, 2003 issue of M-Talk -
http://webuser.bus.umich.edu/Departments/Admissions/si/apply_web/1-31.html)
Thanks to a new partnership with Bloomberg L.P., the University of Michigan
Business School is one of the first business schools in the world to offer an
in-house Bloomberg Professional Certification Program to its students. The
Michigan/Bloomberg partnership will use the 14 Bloomberg financial terminals
installed in the School's new John R. and Georgene M. Tozzi Electronic Business
and Finance Center. The size of Michigan's program, with its large concentration
of Bloomberg terminals, is unmatched at any other school. This outstanding
facility is just another way Michigan provides opportunities for education in
Finance, and supports merging theory into practice (action learning).
The Bloomberg Certification program has been adopted by many financial
institutions and corporations worldwide. It is designed to provide market
professionals with the tools and resources to optimize their job performance.
"Michigan has long been a destination for business students with a career focus
in the financial sector," says Dean Robert J. Dolan. "By forging close
relationships with industry leaders like Bloomberg, Michigan students will
continue to have a significant advantage as they enter the job market with
unique and practical experience."
Alumni Club Update: International Clubs Are an Important Connection
(Excerpts taken from the Monroe Street Journal online at
http://www.themsj.com.)
Approximately one-third of the Business School's alumni clubs and one-half of
our regional contacts are international. These international clubs and contacts
play vital roles in helping Alumni Relations reconnect and stay in touch with
far-flung members of our Global Blue community.
Our faculty is one of the School's greatest resources for maintaining contact
with our international alumni. Throughout the year, Michigan Business faculty
are traveling and teaching abroad, and many of them kindly offer to meet with
alumni during their visits. Often, faculty visits are the occasions around which
club events are designed. Alumni Relations is very grateful to faculty members
who have visited, or will visit, our international alumni in 2002-03.
International Club Activities in Brief
BRAZIL
New officer elections for the UMBS Club of Brazil will take place in spring
2003. In the meantime, Humberto Menusier (MBA '00), has accepted the role of
interim president. Humberto and his fellow officers Carolina Sister (MBA '00),
Paula Pagano (MBA '00) and Daniel Pagano (MBA '00), are currently making final
arrangements for a welcome reception for Dean Bob Dolan, who will visit São
Paulo in February for the Global MBA program graduation. The gala event will
take place on Friday, February 14, at the Casa da Fazenda in Morumbi and will
include alumni of both the MBA and the GMBA programs and their spouses.
GERMANY
The UMBS Club of Germany was launched in Frankfurt last year thanks to the
efforts of Andreas Kirschkamp, who attended the University of Michigan Business
School as an exchange student in 1998. Germany has one of the largest
populations of Michigan exchange students; together with graduates of the
traditional MBA program, they form a promising pool of potential club members.
Two events are on the agenda for winter/spring 2003: an informal
organizational meeting in mid February and a longer meeting with a cultural
program in May. The club would welcome attendance by a Michigan faculty member
at the May event.
Andreas is very eager to establish contact with current MBA students and
exchange students from Germany. For more information or to be included on the
club’s membership list, contact him at andreask@umich.edu.

STUDENT CONNECTIONS
UMBS Real Estate Club Seeks Alumni Support and Network
Re-established early in 2001, the University of Michigan Business School Real
Estate Club has grown from a small group of MBAs interested in a career of
bricks and mortar to over 50 future industry leaders from varied curricula.
Representing U-M schools of business, law, urban planning, architecture and
construction engineering, the Business School Real Estate Club serves to educate
and enable students across a wide range of industry practice. Our primary goal
is to equip members with the knowledge requisite to catalyze career development.
In the past, we have fostered such knowledge sharing by inviting developers,
property managers, financiers and brokerage managers to our group meetings for
case studies and/or corporate presentations. Past speakers have included the
following:
- Sam Zell – U-M BA and JD holder. Mr. Zell is largely credited with
securitizing real estate markets as a pioneer of REIT offerings. As the
country’s single largest owner of office space, and second-largest owner of
apartment space, the noted entrepreneur has been instrumental in founding
several educational institutes fostering real estate and entrepreneurial
tracks. Mr. Zell also helped to established the Samuel Zell and Robert H.
Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. Mr. Zell and Ann Lurie, wife of
the late Robert H. Lurie, jointly committed a 10 million-dollar gift to create
the Entrepreneurial Institute
- Jeff Blau (BBA '90) – Michigan BBA graduate, member of the Alumni
Board of Governors and president of New York’s The Related Companies. Mr. Blau
has been responsible for over $2 billion in development since joining Related,
and is intricately involved in the single largest real estate venture the
world has ever seen: Manhattan’s Columbus Centre development, future Southwest
Central Park home to AOL/Time Warner.
- Stanley Frankel (MBA '64) - Mr. Frankel has both an undergraduate
economics degree and an MBA from U-M, and is a prominent figure in
Southeastern Michigan real estate development, including the Somerset
Collection and surrounding hotels in Troy.
- Paul Robertson – U-M grad and CEO of noted Bloomfield Hills
residential development firm Robertson Brothers. Mr. Robertson was voted 1999
Developer of the Year in the State of Michigan.
In addition to our speaker series, the Club has also engaged in several
professional and academic events since our commencement, including the U-M/ULI
Real Estate Forum and the University of Texas Real Estate Finance Case
Competition. Competing against such institutions as Harvard, Wharton, UC-Berkeley
and Stanford, this year’s Goldman Sachs-sponsored case focused on international
hotel resort valuation. While our team did not win the competition in our debut,
our involvement has helped to solidify our position as an institutional leader
in real estate curriculum and practice.
We now seek your help in strengthening this presence. By committing to speaking
engagements, mentoring opportunities or simply a Real Estate Club Resume Book in
the mail, U-M alumni can advance our position as a leading player in real estate
research and student development. Further, as we are currently working with
several alumni in developing a real estate-related alumni database, your
involvement will aid in furthering networking opportunities for alumni and
students alike.
We are currently scheduling corporate presentations for the remainder of the
term and would like to hear from you. If you are interested in Club involvement,
would like a copy of our resume book, or would like to be part of our alumni
database, please email Jason Braidwood at
jbraid@umich.edu, or visit our website at
www.umbs-realestate.com and enter
your contact information. Thank you and we look forward to your participation.
The Entertainment, Media & Sports Club Takes Manhattan
(Excerpts taken from the Monroe Street Journal online at
http://www.themsj.com.)
 |
|
People often associate the University of Michigan with
sports - but rarely, if ever, with the entertainment and media industries. A
few years ago, such perceptions gave rise to the Entertainment, Media &
Sports Club at Michigan Business School. In addition to providing
educational opportunities for students interested in those areas, one major
mission of the EM&S Club is to improve recruiting opportunities for BBAs and
MBAs.
Along with the Los Angeles Forum, to be held April 3 and 4, the annual EM&S
New York Forum serves as one major access point to careers less typically
sought after by UMBS students. Before spending Friday visiting companies,
BBA and MBA Club members had the opportunity to mingle with alums and
seasoned execs at a Thursday night kick-off reception. This year, the
reception was held at NBC Studios, thanks to Club Founder Marlo Scott (MBA
'00), who is now Director of Business Development at CNBC. Attendees
included entertainment lawyers; executives from broadcast and cable networks
NBC, ESPN, Showtime and HBO; representatives from William Morris Agency, USA
Today, and Island Records; and representatives from the sports industry,
including Crunch Fitness, Major League Baseball, the New York Giants, and
Everlast Boxing. |
For the full article, visit
http://www.themsj.com/news/352185.html.
The Entertainment, Media & Sports Club now is planning its LA Forum, a
professional trip with a similar format to the NY Forum, for April 3-4, 2003. If
you are interested in more information, email the club at
EM&Sforum@umich.edu.
Day in the Life from the Students' Perspective
(Excerpts taken from the Monroe Street Journal online at
http://www.themsj.com.)
The Day in the Life program enables first-year MBAs and BBAs to spend a day
on the job with Michigan Business alumni at a wide range of U.S. companies,
providing them with an invaluable glimpse into the current corporate landscape
and helping them make informed choices about which companies or industries to
pursue in the early stages of their professional job searches. In return,
participating companies are given an unparalleled opportunity to get to know top
Michigan students, either singly or in small groups.
As part of the DITL program, the students are required to write a review of
their experience for publication in The Monroe Street Journal. Nicole Roberts
(BBA1) recalls her trip to Goldman Sachs in Chicago:
"At one hundred and ten stories high, the Sears Tower stands as a grand
monument and landmark of Chicago's thriving business culture. As I gazed up at
the striking skyscraper, I could not help but think how fitting a location for
Goldman Sachs, a firm that is truly in a league of its own. I was ecstatic
that I was given the privilege to experience the daily affairs at a global
investment banking, securities and investment management firm that reflects
such innovation and expertise in all facets of its industry.
With every expectation I would witness extreme professionalism and gain an
in-depth understanding of investment banking, I was eager to begin my
experience at Goldman Sachs. The firm's entrance on the 48th floor struck me.
Impressive gold letters embossed the mahogany lined walls with Goldman Sachs,
two words that mean so much more to me now that I have had the opportunity to
visit. I stood in awe, took a deep breath to compose myself, and entered into
the elegant and dignified office of Goldman Sachs.
We first stopped at the fixed income sales and trading floors, where the fast
paced environment, flashy technology and beaming voices lit up the room. The
employees' excitement for their work was immediately evident; their careers
appeared to be not merely jobs, but passions. Then we continued on our tour of
the office, visiting the gym provided to all employees at their convenience.
Although this appeared out of the business realm, I found it a valuable
addition which illustrated the firm's acknowledgment of a balanced lifestyle."

Review of FuturTech Conference 2003
(Excerpts taken from the Monroe Street Journal online at
http://www.themsj.com.)
Every year since 1999, Business School students and faculty, as well as
members of the local business community, have joined high-tech industry
executives at the FuturTech Conference - the annual event that examines
technology trends that will shape the business landscape. This year's event,
entitled, "Turbulent Technologies: Disturbing the Present, Shaping the Future,"
built upon the success of past years; over 500 people registered to participate,
which drew almost 40 industry executives and thought leaders from over 35
companies.
The conference sought to examine the effects of disruptive technologies on
business practices, functional areas, and new marketplaces across a range of
industries. The conference kicked off on Thursday night, with a keynote address
on, "Social Issues in Technology," delivered by Dr. Derrick Cogburn, that
focused on the global digital divide and the global information infrastructure.
