Dean Dolan Announces the Formation of the Center for Global Resource
Leverage: India
(Excerpts taken from a recent letter from Dean Dolan to the
Business School campus community dated August 27, 2003.)
In concert with our foundational strategy of "creating intellectual capital
with impact," we are very pleased to announce the formation of the Center for
Global Resource Leverage: India. This center is a response to the emerging
pattern of restructuring of industries and the value chains of firms.
Increasingly, managers are focusing on methods to leverage resources globally.
|
|
 |
We are witnessing the migration of a range of professional services such as
equity analysis, radiology, chip design, software architecture, tax planning and
call centers to many countries around the globe. Clearly, our faculty need to
have leading edge expertise on this phenomenon and understand the way value
chains change and evolve as firms leverage global resources. India is emerging
as one of the key focus areas. Therefore, initially, the mission of this center
is to build expertise on issues that intersect the interests of firms from
developed markets and countries such as India that are emerging as a new source
of knowledge workers.
The center will aim to primarily support research and teaching initiatives of
our faculty. The primary focus will be to identify the “next practices” by being
present in areas where the next practices are being developed. We expect that
this will enable researchers under this center to amplify weak signals, identify
trends and shape these trends as they evolve. Since a significant portion of
these globalization initiatives is currently focused on India, in the initial
stages we plan to leverage Michigan Business School’s significant visibility in
India. A small group of our faculty has been involved in India for over a
decade. We have conducted a Forum for CEOs every year for ten years and have run
a 2 week Global Program for Management Development for 8 years. We have also
been active in research. The goal of the Center is to expand these relationships
and become world leaders in research at one of the leading edges of change -
global restructuring of industries and global resource leverage.
Day in the Life Registration Extended to September 22
Alumni hosts are still needed for Day in the Life (DITL) 2003, and there’s
still time to sign up! The deadline for corporate registration has been
extended to September 22. The Day in the Life program enables first-year MBAs
and BBAs to spend a day on the job with Michigan Business School alumni at a
wide range of U.S. companies who help them make informed choices about which
companies or industries to pursue in the early stages of their professional job
searches. In return, alumni have the opportunity to mentor the students and to
reconnect to the School. For companies, DITL gives them a chance to get to know
top Michigan students, either singly or in small groups. Student
applications always outnumber corporate opportunities so please consider hosting
a student at your company. For more information about Day in the Life,
including a list of key dates, contact us at

New Book Explores the Power of POS (Positive
Organizational Scholarship)
(Excerpts taken from Michigan Business
School website -
http://www.bus.umich.edu.)
There may be a better, more effective way for companies
to achieve sustainable excellence in every aspect of
performance, both on the individual and organizational
level. Researchers at the University of Michigan Business
School believe firms can reach this goal by tapping their
“wellsprings” of human talent and creative energy while at
the same time conducting their day-to-day operations using
means that create positive emotion, positive meaning and
positive relationships.
|
This revolutionary field of scientific study is called
Positive Organizational Scholarship, or POS. It has been
established as a center of excellence at the Michigan
Business School where leading faculty will explore its
potential, conduct field studies and share their findings
through college coursework, lifelong learning seminars,
public symposiums, scholarly papers and professional
publications.
A newly released book called "Positive Organizational
Scholarship: Foundations of a New Discipline" describes the virtues and strengths
in individuals and organizations associated with positive
outcomes in business environments. Contributing authors
reveal the dynamics of self-reinforcing positive spirals
and the effects of positive emotion, inquiry and
leadership on employees and companies. The book is
co-edited by Business School faculty members Kim S.
Cameron, Jane E. Dutton and Robert E. Quinn.
“POS is a way to unlock extraordinary human potential,”
Cameron says. “It is a means through which business
organizations can create an environment where people find
meaning and a sense of personal mission, leading to life
fulfillment and purposefulness. POS also can help people
form high-quality relationships, which sustain human
flourishing and self-reliance.”
According to Cameron, Dutton and Quinn, in order for a
company to reach excellence, individual leaders must first
experience a personal transformation that enables them to
see greater possibilities and to attract others through
positive inspiration. Leaders who rely solely on managing
people and change cannot achieve these extraordinary
results, they say.
This “changing me first” phenomenon is the initial step
toward helping a company adopt a positive organizational
approach. Companies also must be results-centered, willing
to live by the values they profess, able to focus on
serving others and open to external influences, the
editors say. This is a tall order, but a worthwhile
endeavor, if a company wants to reach and sustain
excellence in all aspects of its performance, they add.
“POS is not an easy set of solutions that you pull off of
the shelf and implement,” says Dutton, who overlaid POS
onto the content of a core MBA course she taught last
spring. “The most important thing is that there are
wellsprings of human excellence everywhere, which we as
individuals and groups can tap.
“What’s more, we can study these wellsprings and affect
them. Whether you are talking about resolving the Romanian
orphan crisis, turning around a struggling company or
helping demoralized employees, you have the ability to
intervene in the existing system and put it on a positive
trajectory by understanding these wellsprings of human
excellence. For me, this is the key.”

Scholarship, visit the POS Web site at

“Entrepalooza 2003: Entrepreneurship in All its Forms”
Set for September 26
“Entrepalooza 2003: Entrepreneurship in All Its Forms”
will be held Friday, September 26, 2003 from 7:30 a.m. -
1:00 p.m. at the
University of Michigan Business School, Assembly Hall. You
can register to attend the free public symposium at:
http://www.zli.bus.umich.edu/news_events/.
Although the field of entrepreneurship generally has
studied entrepreneurial forms and practices in business
and industrial contexts, this special public symposium
aims at bringing entrepreneurship out not only from an
economic and tech scene but also from a societal platform.
"Entrepalooza 2003" will provide students, venture
capitalists, and business executives a tremendous
networking opportunity in addition to exposure to the
various facets of entrepreneurship.
- Panel discussion topics include: corporate entrepreneurship, social
enterprise, venture capital and southeast Michigan technology ventures.
- Featuring two outstanding keynote speakers: Samuel Zell, chairman of
Equity Group Investments, and Richard Snyder, former COO and president of
Gateway, Inc. and founder and CEO of Ardesta, to share their entrepreneurial
insights, experiences, and knowledge.
Beyond the tools and techniques for starting and
growing a business, entrepreneurship is vision, thinking
outside of the box, and seeing opportunity where no one
else can. It's about passion for creation, drive and
persistence. This half-day symposium will explore how we
understand and conceive entrepreneurship itself as we move
away from the old "organizational" era of homogeneity and
into the "creative" era - creating enterprise in all its
forms for a variety of lifestyles and needs.
"Entrepalooza 2003" is presented by the University of
Michigan Business School Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie
Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and the student-led
Entrepreneur and Venture Capital Club. For further

Professor Lovejoy’s seminar will focus on the coordination of a mix of
personalities, abilities and sympathies that act in concert toward a core
objective. He calls the three ways to create this varied mix “values, markets
and constraints.” In this seminar, you will learn these techniques and how the
most effective managers match their internal structure to their external
competitive context.
Learn how information technology can help your firm cut costs and compete more
effectively. "Business Agility and Information Technology: Making a
Strategic Difference for Your Company," featuring M.S. Krishnan, Computer
Information Systems Department Chair and Michael R. and Mary Kay Hallman Fellow
Associate Professor of Computer and Information Systems, will explore how managers today are
continually being confronted with new and ever-changing competitive pressures
from deregulation, globalization and the convergence of industries and
technologies. Professor Krishnan will explain how a manager’s ability to respond
rapidly to these challenges depends on having a facile organizational and
technical infrastructure as well as a degree of information technology
flexibility that a traditional approach cannot provide. Come discover how you
can create a successful business strategy by leveraging your organization’s
investments in information technology.

Robert Kennedy, Emerging Economies Expert, Joins Davidson Institute as
Associate Director
(Excerpts taken from
Michigan Business School website -
http://www.bus.umich.edu.)
Robert E. Kennedy, an expert on business strategy and industrial dynamics in
emerging economies, has been appointed clinical professor of corporate strategy
and international business and associate director of the William Davidson
Institute (WDI) at the University of Michigan Business School.
|
|
 |
At WDI, Kennedy will be working with the directors of WDI’s
practitioner-oriented initiatives, including executive education, international
technical assistance and institution building, International Multidisciplinary
Action Projects and summer internships, and publications and external
communications. Kennedy will work closely with WDI Director Jan Svejnar, who
will continue to take the lead on the institute’s research activities.
Kennedy is developing an Executive Education Center of Excellence on Managing in
the Global Economy and teaching an MBA elective in business strategy and
emerging markets. He also will work on broader course development issues in the
Corporate Strategy and International Business area. “At most schools, corporate
strategy and international business are separate. I’ve always thought they were
complementary applications of the same underlying concepts. The fact that
Michigan has grouped these together was a big attraction for me.”
Kennedy comes to Michigan from Harvard Business School (HBS), where he served
as associate professor of business administration. Prior to joining the Harvard
faculty in 1995, Kennedy worked in more than a dozen countries as a management
consultant and a venture capitalist. The Stanford graduate holds BAs in

Luncheons with Leaders - "Twenty years, Six Owners, One Management Team: The
Duff & Phelps Story" Featuring Jeff Gordon (MBA '83), Managing Director, Duff &
Phelps, LLC (September 19)
In our continuing Luncheons with Leaders Series, we present the story of Duff &
Phelps. Join us on September 18 at 12:00 p.m. at 200 North LaSalle Street 18th
Floor Conference Room. In this age of corporate downsizing and upheaval,
where a typical career may mean management positions at three to six companies,
Jeff Gordon MBA '83 has an unusual story to tell.
Having spent nearly his entire 20-year career at one financial advisory and
investment banking company, Jeff will relate lessons learned from his frontline
experience with a wide variety of ownership regimes and organizational
structures. Over that time he has overseen the hiring of more than 100
professional staff members as his company grew from less than 15 to nearly 200
at present.
Jeffrey M. Gordon is managing director of Duff & Phelps' Financial
Advisory/Valuation practice in Chicago. Since joining Duff & Phelps in 1985, Mr.
Gordon has been involved in over 500 corporate transactions and financial
advisory engagements for public and privately held firms in connection with
leveraged buyouts, fairness opinions, financing decisions, estate planning, and
business valuations for a wide variety of purposes in a broad range of
industries, with a specialty in REITs and other real-estate related entities.
Clients include equity and mortgage REITs, partnerships, and operating companies
with interests in commercial, residential, industrial, and retail properties.
His other clients include companies in the technology, telecommunications,
manufacturing, transportation, business and financial services, and healthcare
industries.
Mr. Gordon has written extensively on fairness opinions and business valuation,
REITs, M&A transactions, and corporate structure for such publications as the
Journal of Business Strategy, Accounting Today, Chief Financial Officer, and
Commerce Magazine.

representatives, we are pleased to invite you to attend our series of Top MBA
Career Services Conferences. These half-day conferences will be held in
conjunction with the World MBA Tour. Early registrants include Harvard Business
School and Bain & Company in Boston, INSEAD and Booz Allen Hamilton in London,
among many others.
"Dealing with the new threat to your MBA Program - how to overcome the MBA
recruitment crisis"
The economic slow-down experienced by most major nations in recent years
appears to be abating, and due to severe cut-backs in industries such as
finance, increased MBA hiring is anticipated for 2003-2004. Join our conference
for the opportunity to network with the MBA program officers who
can help you tap into the pool of talent graduating from their universities
every year. Learn how to forge relationships that are productive for the
recruiter, the student, and the school.
As the organizers of the World MBA Tour, publishers of The MBA Career Guide
since 1990, operators of Top MBA Careers and producers of the topmba.com
International Recruiter Research since 1995, Top MBA clients include all the
world's leading business schools and MBA recruiters. The international
market-maker in MBA recruitment, Top MBA's central position affords unique
insight.
The results of the 2003 topmba.com International Recruiter Research will be
disseminated to the attendees. Our research, based uniquely on the response of
MBA recruiters, offers insights into the MBA marketplace which conference
attendees can utilize in the coming year to better prepare their students and
alumni for the changing job market.

Global Workplace Presents "Effective Negotiation Skills for Work, Rest and
Play"
Global Workplace, in association with Management Advantage Ltd presents,
"Effective Negotiation Skills For Work, Rest and Play," on Tuesday, September 16
at the London Business School, from 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This will be a full day interactive workshop for a maximum of 30 participants with coffee,
lunch, tea and comprehensive course notes.
- Do you make concessions too quickly and then wish you hadn't?
- Do you just agree to 'split the difference' when trying to agree a price?
- Do you ever feel anxious that you might be offering too little, or asking too
much?
- Do you ever feel 'railroaded' into accepting a proposition that isn't what you
really want?
Some people are natural negotiators. Most of us aren't, and tend to fall back
into traits learned as far back as childhood. Whether in the hard-headed business
environment of a multi-million pound deal or agreeing a fee with the plumber, we
tend to be held back by the risk of embarrassment, the need to conform and the
fear of failure - and the techniques to deal with these apparently different
situations can be much the same!
Through the use of example, anecdote and interaction, workshop leaders Siamak
Bashi and Tony Newton (both London Business School Sloan Fellows) demonstrate
the strategies and tactics that can help you in any negotiating situation. There
is ample opportunity for 'role play' to try out these techniques and approaches
in a safe, supportive environment. We can also discuss and help resolve any
issues that you may have relating to specific negotiation situations, such as a
salary discussion or contract renewal.
The workshop's modular format covers the following themes:
- Life's A Negotiation - Why good negotiation skills are crucial to modern life.
- Money Isn't Everything - Price isn't the only thing open to discussion.
- Knowing Me, Knowing You - Keeping your friends close and your opponents closer.
- The Negotiator's Toolbox - Strategies for negotiation.
- ...But Which Spanner Fits? - Choosing the right tools for the situation.
- Ain't What you Say, It's The Way That You Say It - Non verbal communication in
negotiation.
- Keeping Your Tools Sharp - You can negotiate any time, any place, anywhere.
