David D. Alger Alumni Achievement Award

Established in 1989, this award recognizes an alumnus or alumna of the Ross School of Business whose attainments in their professional field have brought distinction to themselves, credit to the School and benefit to their fellow citizens.

The Alumni Achievement Award has been renamed in honor of David D. Alger, MBA '68, and 2001 recipient of this award.  David was a dynamic, involved, passionate member of the Ross community and a member of the Ross School Visiting Committee.  He tragically perished in events of September 11.


2007 Award Recipient

Stephen Sanger, MBA ’70

Stephen W. Sanger joined General Mills in 1974 and is currently the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of General Mills. Some of the past positions Mr. Sanger held include President of the Big G Cereal Division and President of Yoplait USA. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1992 and was named President of General Mills in October 1993. Also, previously, he held marketing and sales positions with Procter & Gamble.

Sanger is a director of the Target Corporation, Wells Fargo & Company and a member of the board of Catalyst, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the Guthrie Theater and the Minnesota Business Partnership. Additionally, he is a member of the Grocery Manufacturers of America, Business Council, the Business Roundtable, the Conference Board, and a member of the Board of Advisors of the Retail Food Industry Center.

Sanger has returned to campus to speak with students and hosted Dean Dolan and Minneapolis alumni for Michigan on the Road in June of 2005. He returned to campus in October 2006 to present the inaugural Susan B. Meister Lecture in Child Health Policy; Mr. Sanger's lecture on "Corporate Responsibility in Child Health" included important topics such as youth nutrition, childhood obesity, and fitness.
