Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I want to attend UpClose as a way to visit the campus and learn more about the program. However, I also want to apply by the first round application deadline (October 10th) which falls prior to this event. What should I do?

A: While visiting campus prior to applying can help you assess whether the Ross MBA Program is the right fit for you, we know that it may be difficult to do so before the Round I application deadline, or that you may prefer to attend UpClose. If that's the case, you can learn about Ross through other resources:
     1) Meet a Ross representative at one of our information sessions or at an MBA fair around the world
     2) Connect with a Ross ambassador (a current student)
If you do decide to visit campus before the Round I deadline, we encourage you to take advantage of our Class Visit & Tour Program. These run Monday-Thursday (we don't have classes on Fridays).

Q: If I don't get accepted to UpClose does that mean that I won't get into the school?

A: Your application to UpClose will in no way, positively or negatively, impact your actual admissions application to the MBA program. Admission to UpClose in no way reflects a candidate's potential for full-time MBA admission, nor is the weekend a prescreening process for full-time selection. We encourage all candidates to not only apply to the weekend, but to apply for full-time admission whether or not invited to the weekend.

Q: Where will I stay during UpClose?

A: As our guest for UpClose, we will provide hotel accommodations for you at the Four Points Sheraton Ann Arbor on Thursday, November 6, and Friday, November 7. Check-in & registration will take place between noon and 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 6.

Official UpClose programming ends on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. If you'd like to stay in Ann Arbor for an extra evening, hotel rooms have been secured for Saturday night as well, and you may stay in your assigned room at your own cost. For your convenience, you will be paired with a fellow UpClose participant of the same gender who plans to leave on the same date.

If your arrival will be delayed, you need to leave early, or if your schedule changes at any point, please notify us immediately.

Q: How do I get to the University of Michigan?

A: If you are flying, please book your tickets to Detroit International Airport (DTW). Detroit is a Northwest Airlines hub, but is also serviced by most other major airlines. The airport is a 30 minute drive from the University of Michigan campus. Taxis from the airport to Ann Arbor typically cost ~$50-$60. The Ann Arbor Airport Shuttle rates run slightly cheaper. A third alternative is the Michigan Flyer. This shuttle services Ann Arbor at the Four Points Sheraton and costs $15 one way.

Q: Should I consider renting a car for the weekend?

A: For your convenience, we will provide bus service between the hotel and Ross for UpClose events on Friday and Saturday.

In addition, we will be providing taxi vouchers for any additional transportation needs to and from UpClose events throughout the weekend (limited to Ann Arbor city only - these vouchers are not valid for airport rides).

Q: How do I find my way around Ross?

A: Maps will be provided when you check in at the registration table and signs will be posted at all events.

Q: What is the dress code for UpClose?

A: Program events will take place Thursday evening through Saturday afternoon. Dress for the weekend is business casual (i.e., slacks, collared shirts), with the exception of Friday night's reception. The reception will require business attire.
Weather in Ann Arbor can be fairly unpredictable in early-November, so please come prepared to dress for both warm and chilly temperatures (layers are a great idea). Your best bet is to check the weather before you leave for Ann Arbor and pack accordingly.

Q: How much money should I bring for the weekend?

A: Please bring enough money to cover airport transportation, and dinner on Saturday evening (should you choose to stay and extra night). All other costs are on us!

Q: What if I have more questions?

A: Not a problem! Please send us an email at melberko@umich.edu
