PhD Admissions FAQs

Q: Do I have to submit a TOEFL score if I have a degree in the U.S.?

A: If your native language is not English, you must submit either a TOEFL or IELTS score that is less than two years old regardless of where you earned your degree(s). The required minimum performance level on the TOEFL is 106 (with component scores of 26 for Reading and Listening and 27 for Speaking and Writing) for the iBT, 600 for the PBT, 250 for the CBT, and 7.0 for the IELTS.

Self-waiver is not an option and the possession of a degree from within the United States (or from another country where English is the primary language of instruction) does not exempt applicants from submitting this test score.

Failure to include a required TOEFL/IELTS score results in an incomplete application which will not be reviewed by the admissions committee.

Q: Do you accept a GRE in place of a GMAT score?
A: The GMAT is the preferred test but we will accept a GRE score. We will only accept official GMAT or GRE test scores for exams less than 5 years old. We do not have required minimum scores. Average GMAT scores for admitted applicants range between 660 and 770, while average GRE scores range from 550 to 800 for the Verbal component and 700-800 for the Quantitative component.
Q: Do you accept copies of test scores?
A: No, test scores must be received directly from the testing services; no copies will be accepted.
Q: What are your institution codes for the GMAT, GRE, and TOEFL?
A: Our GRE/TOEFL/ETS institution code is 1839. Our GMAT institution code is SN1-J6-77.
Q: Can I apply to more than one area?
A: You should narrow down your choice before applying and apply to one area only. Even when affiliated with one department, you can still take courses in other departments.
Q: Do I have to list my courses on the application?
A: No, this is not necessary.
Q: Do I need an MBA or other Master's degree in order to apply to the PhD Program?
A: No, only a 4-year bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) is required. However, about 60% of our applicants do have a relevant Master's degree.
Q: Can you tell me if I am qualified to apply to your program based on information I give you about my test scores, transcripts, work experience, etc.?

A: Given the complex nature of the admissions process, we are not able to make any preliminary judgments about the competitiveness of an applicant's credentials. If you are interested in our program, we encourage you to apply. You can also visit our website to see a basic statistical breakdown of students who have been admitted to the program, but please note these are general benchmarks - not minimum requirements.

Q: Do international students have to submit a financial support statement?

A: Yes, this is a part of the process for international applicants. Failure to submit the requested information could result in a delay in processing your immigration paperwork.

Q: How long does it take to complete the program?

A: On average, five years even if you have an MBA - two years of coursework and approximately three years of research and dissertation writing.

Q: I'm currently a Ph.D. student in a program at another school and I am interested in transferring to Michigan. Is this possible?

A: We do not have a transfer process. If you applied and were admitted to our program, you would be starting your Ph.D. over from the beginning.

Q: What is the admission rate?

A: 4-5% of the applicant pool.

Q: How many students are admitted to each department in any given year?
A: This varies by area, but on average, 1-3.
Q: I may have some documents sent to Michigan before I submit the application forms. What happens to them?

A: Please see our Apply Now page for complete details. We prefer that you submit your application and supporting materials electronically. Where you must mail materials we expect all required documentation (except official GMAT/GRE and TOEFL scores) will be sent in the same envelope. This will ensure faster processing. All materials sent to our office should clearly indicate your name, UMID if available, and the area to which you are applying.

Remember: Any documentation submitted in support of the application becomes the property of the University of Michigan and cannot be returned to the applicant.
Q: What if my application is missing some of the required supporting documentation?
A: The application deadline is Tuesday, January 15th. The online system will close at 12:01am PST on January 16th. Therefore, you must submit the online application by the stated deadline. There is no guarantee late applications will be reviewed. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed until all supporting documentation has been received.
Q: What if I miss the January 15th deadline?
A: The online system will close at 12:01am PST on January 16th. Applications are not accepted past the deadline.
Q: Should I send anything directly to the department or faculty?

A: No, applicants should follow the directions on the How to Apply site regarding how and where to submit documents.

Q: Where can I download a copy of the application?

A: The application is now completed online. Printed and printable copies of the application are only provided when an applicant has severely restricted access to the internet. Contact the Ph.D. program office to request these materials.
