Ross international students may borrow from private lenders; however,
most of these will require a US citizen or permanent resident co-signer.
Private
loans for international students that do not require a co-signer are listed
here
University of Michigan students borrowed from more than 20 different
private lenders in 2008. From this private lenders link, scroll down to
"Comparing Private Loan Programs" to view the list of loan providers most often
used.
For help comparing loan options, see the
FinAid website
loan analyzer.
Federal regulations and University policy severely limit the types of
US Federal financial assistance available to international students.
Specifically, international students with F-1, F-2, J-1, J-2; and G series
visas are not eligible for federal student aid.
Non-U.S. citizens may qualify for need-based student financial
aid programs if they are one of the following:
 |
A U.S. permanent resident with an Alien Registration Receipt Card
(I-151, I-551, or I-551C) |
 |
A U.S. national (includes natives of American Samoa or Swain’s Island)
|
 |
An eligible non-citizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from
the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service showing one or more of the
following designations:
 |
Refugee |
 |
Asylum Granted |
 |
Indefinite Parole and/or Humanitarian Parole |
 |
Cuban-Haitian Entrant, Status Pending |
 |
Conditional Entrant (valid only if issued before April 1, 1980) |
|
Note: If you have only a Notice of Approval to Apply for Permanent
Residence (I-171 or I-464), you are not eligible for federal student aid.
Citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the
Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau are eligible only for Federal
Work-Study.
