BBA Admission FAQs:

Preferred Admission

Q:  What is the essay question for the preferred admission option?

Include a full discussion of your interest in the Ross School of Business in the second essay of the U-M supplement to the Common Application.  That question reads as follows:  "Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific School or College (including preferred admission and dual-degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan.  How would that curriculum support your interests?  "

Q:  When will I receive a decision about my preferred admission application?

Up to 16 weeks after you receive a formal offer of admission to U-M. We receive your application for preferred admission after the U-M Office of Undergraduate Admissions admits you, and we have no influence over their admission process or timeline. We will notify you about your preferred admission decision at the email address you provide in the application.

Q:  What courses look good to the Ross Admissions Committee?

We want to see how well you perform academically through the end of your senior year in high school, particularly in quantitative courses such as Math.  We recommend you take courses that are both challenging and appropriate for you. We encourage AP, IB, or similar advanced courses when you, your parents, and your guidance counselor believe they are appropriate. Students who take a large number of non-graded or non-academic courses will probably not be as competitive as other applicants.

Q:  Will my senior-year grades be considered as a part of my application?

After you have been offered preferred admission, we ask you to submit first- and second-semester transcripts directly to us. We will give you more details in the letter of admission.

Q:  If I don't apply or am not accepted for preferred admission, may I apply for regular admission when I'm a U-M freshman?

YES, we encourage it! The two application processes are separate.

Q:  What is the November 1 "priority review" deadline?

The Ross School of Business gives preference to freshman applications submitted by the U-M Early Action deadline.

Q:  How many spaces are available, and what are my chances?

Admission is highly selective. View the 2011 BBA Class Profiles for our most recent admission statistics. We anticipate having about 100 preferred admission spaces in the 2011 class.

Q:  How difficult are the freshman-year requirements?  What if I don't meet them?

The vast majority of preferred admission students who take their studies seriously, manage their time well, and use support services are able to meet the small number of PA program requirements. The very few students who believe they might not meet the requirements are welcome to apply for Regular Admission, even while they remain in the Preferred Admission program.

Q:  Do Preferred Admission students live in the same residence hall or receive priority in housing assignments?

No.
