How to Apply

Each year, the Ross School of Business admits a highly selective group of students from high school and a group of first-year college students for study in the BBA Program. All students who are admitted into the BBA Program will earn the same BBA degree and have the same degree requirements to fulfill regardless of time of entry into the program. Please see specific information below on how to apply to the BBA Program based on your student status at the time of application. To request more information on the BBA Program, please click here.

Fall 2008 Application Deadlines:

Preferred Admission - January 4, 2008

Regular Admission - March 31, 2008

High School Seniors

High School seniors who wish to apply to the Ross School of Business will do so during their senior year of high school. Admission into this program is highly selective. Of the applications reviewed for the Fall 2007 entering class, only 19% were offered admission.  The majority of the students who were offered admission are among the top applicants to the University of Michigan (download additional information on the Fall 2007 students who were offered preferred admission). Each year, though the number of applications is expected to be greater, we will be extending approximately the same number of admissions offers.  Prospective students may apply by completing the application to the University of Michigan through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and indicating their interest as a "preferred admit" to the Ross School of Business. Deadline to apply for Preferred Admission is January 4, 2008.

If accepted, the admitted student will become a “preferred admit.” This means that the student will be an LS&A student but is given a set of requirements to meet during their freshman year. If these requirements are successfully met, the student will automatically be transferred to the Ross School of Business at the end of their freshman year.

Please note that if a student does not apply or is not accepted into the Ross School of Business as a high school senior, this does not hurt the chances of being accepted into the 3-year program. The Ross School of Business encourages students to apply for admission into the BBA 3-year program during their freshman year of college.  The majority of students who will enter the 3-year BBA program will apply to the Ross School of Business as a University of Michigan LS&A freshman and begin the BBA program as a University of Michigan sophomore.

Michigan Freshmen

University of Michigan freshman who wish to apply to the Ross School of Business will do so during the second term of their freshman year. Prospective students for the BBA Program will be evaluated based on their grades in their undergraduate courses, leadership and extracurricular activities and essays.

Students who wish to apply to the Bachelor of Business Administration Program are required to have completed or have in-progress the following courses: Calculus (Math 115), the Sweetland Writing Center freshman writing requirement, and Economics 101.

Submit your completed application minus your UM transcript by the deadline. If you are a University of Michigan - Ann Arbor student, the Ross School of Business will pull your unofficial transcript once Winter (second semester) grades are posted.

Admission to the BBA Program is highly competitive. The middle 80% of admitted students had a GPA from 3.3 to 3.8 (download additional information on the Fall 2007 students who were offered admission to the 3-year BBA Program). Consideration for admission requires that a minimum of 27 transferable credits from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor will be completed by the end of second semester. Strength of overall academic schedule, extra-curricular activities after high school and required essays (a part of the application) play an important role in choosing among applicants with similar academic credentials. The deadline for University of Michigan  - Ann Arbor freshmen to apply for regular admission is March 31, 2008.

Transfer Student - Freshmen

A minimum of 27 transferable credit hours (maximum of 45) are needed for admission. If you are a non-UM Ann Arbor student, you must send your final official transcript to our office (address below) by no later than June 15, 2008. Submit the rest of your application by the deadline. General guidelines for those wishing to transfer to the Ross School of Business include:

  • Courses will only transfer with a grade of C or better (C- does not transfer)
  • Pass/Fail courses must be accompanied by official documentation of a C grade or better
  • Mathematics: limit of four (4) credits granted for pre-calculus course work (see LS&A Bulletin for details)
  • Computer courses are only accepted if from a math, computer or engineering department
  • Management of Information System courses: only non-business courses transfer, A Level Courses: only non-business course work transfers.

The deadline for transfer students to apply for regular admission is March 31, 2008.

See the BBA Bulletin for additional information on transferability of non-business and business credits.
