Preferred Admission

Preferred Admission guarantees select, highly talented high-school seniors a place in the three-year Ross BBA program, provided they meet a few minimum requirements during their freshman year at Michigan.  Preferred Admission also gives students a head start exploring their business interests:  students participate in special workshops, meet Ross faculty, receive support from BBA advisors and mentors, and take a course in the BBA Core curriculum.

We're still accepting applications for Fall 2010 Preferred Admission

Applying to UM after the November 1 Early Response deadline?  You can still apply for Preferred Admission, despite language to the contrary in some UM application materials.  We suggest you fill out the UM freshman application soon, including the supplemental questions for Ross Preferred Admission, while spaces are still available.  We can review your application for Ross Preferred Admission only after the UM Office of Undergraduate Admissions admits you to the University of Michigan.

Eligibility Requirements

Preferred Admission applicants must receive an offer of summer or fall admission to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; the College of Engineering; the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; or the School of Art and Design by May 1, 2010.

Applicants who receive an offer of summer or fall admission to UM-Ann Arbor after May 1, 2010 are encouraged to apply for Regular Admission during their freshman year at Michigan.

Winter, spring, and transfer applicants to UM-Ann Arbor should apply for Regular Admission

Admission Criteria

Admission is highly selective.  We conduct a holistic review, and there is no formula to define who makes a good candidate.  In general, we're looking for:

  • Bright students from diverse locations and backgrounds who have an interest in business.
  • Excellent grades in rigorous high-school courses.
  • Strong quantitative reasoning skills, often shown by AP or other advanced work in Calculus.
  • Coherent, well-written application essays that honestly reflect your ideas, aspirations, and experiences.
  • Participation in extracurricular activities and/or part-time employment, emphasizing quality over quantity.
  • Excellent letters of recommendation.
  • View the 2009 Preferred Admission Class Profile.

Program Requirements

  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.300 or higher by the end of your freshman winter term.1
  • Complete First-Year Writing, Economics 101, and any course in Calculus I, II, or III at UM-Ann Arbor, each with a grade of C or better, by the end of your freshman winter term.2
  • Earn at least 27 credits at UM-Ann Arbor, each with a grade of C or better, during your freshman fall and winter terms, combined.3
1 GPAs are not rounded up from 3.299.  If you elect courses on the optional pass/fail basis, we will recalculate your GPA to reflect the actual letter grades you earned when determining whether you have met this requirement.

2 AP credit for Calculus I or II (Math 120 or 121) will substitute for the required course in Calculus.  IB or A-level credit for Economics 101 and UM Calculus I, II, or III will substitute for the required courses in Economics and Calculus.

3 AP, IB, A-level, and transfer credits do not count toward the 27 required credits.  Courses in the Officer Education Program do not count toward the 27 required credits unless they are cross-listed in another UM department.  Courses in the School of Kinesiology do not count toward the 27 required credits, except those listed in item 3 under "Non-LSA Course Work" in the LSA Bulletin (p. 7 in the printed edition).  Students who receive only 2 credits in Math 105 after taking Math 103 are considered to have earned 4 credits in Math 105 for the sake of meeting our admission requirements.  Your academic advisor can help you select appropriate courses.
