Dual Degree Opportunities

Health Services Administration (Public Health)

The Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and the Department of Health Management and Policy within the School of Public Health offer a dual degree program enabling a small number of qualified persons to pursue concurrent work in business administration and health services leading to the MBA and MHSA degrees.

The program is arranged so that all requirements for both degrees are completed in three years of enrollment. The degrees are awarded simultaneously.

This combined degree program is not open to students who have earned either the MBA or MHSA degrees. Students registered in the first year of either program may apply.

Students admitted to this dual degree program must satisfy the following requirements:

1) MBA 57 credit hour degree program including:

  • 45 Business Administration Credits, made up of:
    • Roughly 30 credit hour MBA core (no credit is awarded for Business Administration core courses successfully waived: credit must be earned with Business electives);
    • Roughly 15 elective hours in Business Administration;
    • MBA Communication Requirement

2) MHSA 60 credit hour degree program including:

  • MHSA core;
  • Health Management and Policy departmental requirements;
  • 15 hours of transferable credit hours from the School of Business Administration.

The total credit hours for the dual degree must be at least 90.

The dual program may begin with studies in either school. However, because of the sequenced nature of core courses in the MBA program, most students will find it advantageous to start with year one in the Business School. During year two the students will fulfill the first year curriculum for the MHSA. In year three, the student will attend courses in both programs. Each school will apply its own deferred admission standards to students who elect to take the first year in the other school. Students who wish to begin with Health Services Administration should see a counselor in the Business School to arrange an appropriate plan of study.

The School of Public Health will accept Business School core courses equivalent to the MHSA core courses. If the student is enrolled in the School of Public Health first, HMP 643 or HMP 616 may be substituted for Business School core course MO 503. Biostat 503, 523, or 553 may be substituted for Business School core course OMS 502.

Candidates interested in the dual program must file separate applications to and be admitted by both schools. Applicants must indicate on both applications that they are applying for this specific dual degree program (please make sure the correct box is checked on the MBA application). The application fee can be paid to either of the two schools; please include a note regarding the disposition of the fee to the school not receiving the money.

Applicants must take the GMAT for Admission to Michigan's Ross School of Business and the School of Public Health.
