Dual Degree Opportunities
The Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of
Michigan and the Department of
Civil Engineering within the Rackham School of Graduate Studies offer a
dual degree program enabling a small number of qualified persons to
pursue concurrent work in business administration and construction
engineering and management studies leading to the MBA and MSE (CE & M)
degrees.
The program is arranged so that all requirements for both degrees can be
completed in two and one-half years of enrollment. The degrees are
awarded simultaneously.
This combined degree program is not open to students who have earned
either the MBA or MSE (CE&M) degree. Students registered in the first
year of either program may apply. The typical student is expected to
hold a BS degree in engineering and to have an interest in a business
and engineering career that includes construction.
Students admitted to this dual degree program must satisfy the following
degree requirements:
1) The MBA 57 credit hour degree program including:
- 45 Business Administration Credits, made up of:
- Roughly 30 credit hour MBA core (no credit is awarded for
Business Administration core courses successfully waived; credit
must be earned with business electives);
- Roughly 15 elective hours in Business Administration;
- MBA communication requirement.
- Up to 12 credit hours of transferable CE&M electives from the
Department of Civil Engineering.
2) The MSE (CE&M) 30 credit hour degree program, including:
- 18 credit hours of 500 level or above CE&M courses, which include CE
531, CE 532, and CE 536;
- CE431 if students have not previously taken it or its equivalent;
- A 3-credit hour independent study course under CE630 in order to
integrate the management skills learned in the Business School with the
technical construction engineering skills learned in Civil Engineering;
- Nine credit hours of transferable electives (six if CE431 is taken)
from Business Administration, including three credit hours of an
acceptable Operations and Management Science (OMS) course or courses.
The total credit hours for the dual degree program must be at least 69.
The dual program may begin with studies in either school. However, because of
the sequenced nature of core courses in the MBA program, most students will find
it advantageous to start with year one in the Business School. During year two,
courses are taken in both schools. Students should finish the program in CE&M.
Students who wish to begin in CE&M should see a counselor in the Business School
to arrange an appropriate plan of study. No course work completed prior to
admission in either program may be counted toward the MBA requirements of the dual program.
Applicants interested in the dual program must file separate applications to and
be admitted by both schools. Candidates must indicate on both applications that
they are applying for this specific dual degree program.

sample plan and students should speak with an advisor at CE&M for specific
degree requirements.
