RE: Registration for Winter 2010

Be sure to review all the information below about Winter registration carefully!!

  1. Prepare for Course Registration: October 19 - November 15
  2. Review Core Schedule and Backpack: November 16 - 22
  3. Register for Winter A Classes: November 23 - January 10

Course Registration Timeline for Winter 2010

I. Prepare for Course Registration: October 19 - November 15 (return to top of page)

  1. Review the MBA1 Core Curriculum: The Winter core curriculum for MBA1s contains a total of 12 credits:

    Winter A (January 11 - February 26) Winter B (March 8 - April 29)
    ACC 552 (2.25) BA 553 (7.5)
OMS 552 (2.25) MBA1 students may not register for additional courses during Winter B.
Option to take an elective course and /or additional core degree requirements. Total credits for A term cannot exceed 9 credits.
    Total = 4.5 credits (up to 9 with elective(s)) Total =  7.5 credits

  2. Submit Winter Core Waiver Requests: DUE November 2, 2009: Submissions to waive out of ACC 552 or OMS 552 should be submitted to Academic Services by November 2. Read the full Core Course Waiver document for details.

  3. Review the MBA degree requirements: For those students NOT waiving any core courses during Winter A, we recommend that you consider carefully before adding any additional electives or degree requirements. Remember that Winter A is an extremely busy time for internship interviewing and students are encouraged to allow ample room in their class schedules to focus on this activity. For many years your predecessors in the program requested a lighter class load during the interviewing season, so please take advantage of your Winter schedule to focus on recruiting and to catch your breath after the busy Fall schedule!

However, the University does allow students to select up to 18 credits per term. This means that all incoming students have space in their schedule during the Winter A period to opt to take an elective course. Tauber Institute and Erb Institute students may have additional courses required for their programs that they will need to register for during Winter A. MBA1 students may NOT register for courses in addition to MAP (BA 553) during Winter B.

If you do decide to add a course to your Winter A schedule, you can explore other elective options by reviewing our current Course Descriptions. As you consider courses, you may choose to take an elective in your area of interest to prepare you for your internship, or you can choose to complete one of the additional degree requirements. Keep in mind that:

    • 57 Credits are needed to graduate (an average of 14.25 credits per semester).
    • STRATEGY 503: World Economy must be completed at some time during your two years. Note that STRATEGY 503 is a required prerequisite for some upper level STRATEGY electives (STRATEGY 584: Business in Asia, in particular). If you hope to register for elective courses in your second year that require this course as a prerequisite, you will want to complete STRATEGY 503 in your first year.
    • Communication Requirement: You must complete ONE of the following two options:
      1. Complete any one of the following classes: LHC 520, LHC 521, LHC 522, LHC 524 or LHC 560.
        OR
      2. Pass the Communication Waiver Exam: Offered annually in July/August. Full-Time MBA students (including all MBA Duals) can take the Communication Waiver Exam at any point during their education in the MBA program. Unlike other MBA waiver exams, MBA students have multiple opportunities to take the exam, however, students who do not successfully pass the waiver exam will need to fulfill the Communication requirement with course work (see the above list of classes).
    • Law/Ethics Requirement: You must complete one of the following courses during your two years:
      • BA 512, ES/LHC 504, LHC 506, LHC 507, LHC 508, LHC 509, LHC 511, LHC 512, LHC 513, LHC 514, LHC 515, LHC 516, LHC 517 or LHC 582.
    • You may elect 500-level and above non-Business School courses at UM-Ann Arbor (up to a maximum of 10 credits throughout your MBA career). Courses from other graduate programs are listed in the University Time Schedule (http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/schedule/).

  4. Check Your Account for Financial Holds:
    1. Review your Student Account status on Wolverine Access to confirm that no Holds (Service Indicators) are in place which would block your registration into classes. Check even if you are sure your statement is okay!
    2. Clear your bills.
    3. Request Student Financial Operations or the cashier to lift your financial hold. This is not done automatically. Call 734-764-7447.

  5. Review the Schedule of Classes: On Monday, October 19 the Winter 2010 Schedule of Classes will be viewable on Wolverine Access and the Registrar's website.
    • Check prerequisites: You are responsible for meeting the course prerequisites for elective classes. Check the Course Descriptions thoroughly for course prerequisites and feel free to reach out to an instructor if you have specific questions.
      • If a prerequisite is listed in the system as a "Course" prerequisite, Wolverine Access will NOT allow you to register for the course unless you have completed the requirements in a prior term. (If you have completed the requirement via waiver, please contact Academic Services for permission to enroll.)
      • If a prerequisite is "Advisory", Wolverine Access will allow you to enroll without having fulfilled the requirement; however, instructors reserve the right to remove you at a later (less convenient) date. Please review prerequisite information CAREFULLY, and contact the instructor/department or Academic Services if you have any questions.
    • Remember core classes: MBA1 students may NOT take any full-term or Winter B courses that will overlap with MAP. Winter A electives will need to be selected to avoid conflicts with assigned core sections.
    • Course Load: A normal full-time course load is about 15 credit hours a term, with a maximum of 18 credits. You must select a minimum of 9 credit hours to be a full-time student. Going below 9 credits makes you a part-time student, which affects financial aid, degree progress, and (for international students) immigration status. To register for fewer than 9 credits in a term, you must request academic counselor approval.
    • Continuing Classes: If you are registered for ACC 630.001 in the Fall B term, be aware that this class continues through the Winter A term at the same day/time as in Fall B. Academic Services will pre-register any students enrolled in the Fall B sections into the Winter A sections prior to registration opening on November 23.

II. Review Core Schedule and Backpack: November 16 - 22 (return to top of page)

  1. Review your core course schedule on Wolverine Access: In early November, Academic Services will pre-register MBA1 students into the three Winter core courses (ACC 552, OMS 552 and BA 553).
  2. View your assigned registration appointment time on Wolverine Access: November 16.
  3. Backpack elective classes on Wolverine Access: November 16 through assigned registration appointment time.
  4. Friday, November 20: Ensure that you have cleared any Financial Holds on your account.

III. Register for Winter A Classes: November 23 - January 10 (return to top of page)

  1. Monday, November 23 - Wednesday, November 25: Registration appointment times begin for graduate students. Appointment times are assigned based on bands of students with similar credit hours completed, and then are assigned randomly within those bands. For most MBA1s, appointment times will be assigned for either late on Tuesday, November 24 or throughout the day on Wednesday, November 25. Students will be able to modify their course schedules via Wolverine Access to drop any waived core courses and add any additional electives or degree requirements to their Winter A schedule.
  2. Add/Drop classes & obtain Permissions for closed classes: View the Registration Calendar as well as the Academic Calendar for the specific drop/add deadlines. After the drop/add deadline, you must have your drop/add form signed by Academic Services, and any drop must be accompanied by a completed Drop/Add Verification Form. For more instructions on modifying your schedule and getting permissions for closed classes:
  3. Be aware of Class Attendance Policies: At the discretion of the instructor, students may be dropped from a class if they do not attend the first class meeting for a once-a-week class, or the first two class meetings for a twice-a-week class. Be sure to review the CTools site for each class for additional attendance guidelines.
