Textbook and other course requirements are typically available on
each course’s CTools web site.
Since access to an individual course’s CTools site is not available
until you are registered for that course,
textbook information for
Fall core courses is available ahead of time to help you plan for your core courses.
- Submit Fall Core Waiver Requests: DUE June 9, 2008 (Round 1
and 2 admits) and August 1, 2008 (Round 3 admits): Submissions to waive out of ACC 502,
BE 502, MKT 503 or MO 503 should have been
submitted to Academic Services by June 1, 2008 for round 1 and 2 admits,
and should be submitted to Academic Services by August 1, 2008 for round
3 admits. Read the full
Core Course Waiver document for details.
- Take the online Communication Waiver Exam: July 21 - August
18 (see below for more details about the
Communication
Requirement)
- Review the MBA degree requirements and begin to consider whether
you will want to make any adjustments to your Fall schedule: We encourage all of you to thoroughly
consider your schedule before you decide whether or not to take any
courses in addition to the core during your first term here on campus.
The core course work is intense, and the fall is also packed with
recruiting events, club and section activities, the Michigan football
season and simply acclimating to school life and a new town! We consider
a full load to be around 15 credits per term and do not encourage
students to exceed this - especially during their first term.
However, the University does allow students to select up to 18
credits per
term. This means that all incoming students have space in their schedule
during the Fall B period to opt to take either a 1.5 or 2.25 credit
elective course. Those students who decide to take the Fall A Finance
513 course or those who waive other Fall core courses may have room for
up to two 1.5 or 2.25 credit electives, or one 3.0 credit elective.
Please be aware that per a Ross Faculty Curriculum Committee policy,
MBA1 students may not exceed 9 credits in any half term, or 18 total for
the full term. The Committee is concerned about students' ability to
properly engage in group activities, maintain the rapid pace of our
half-term core classes, and meet all the other expectations of our MBA
degree program. This means that only those students who waive a Fall A
course and are not completing FIN 513 will be able to register for an
elective in Fall A, and students who are completing all three core
courses in Fall B may only add one elective course to their Fall B term. Tauber Institute and Erb Institute students will have additional courses
required for their program which may fill their Fall schedules.
If you do decide to add an additional course to your Fall schedule, some
specific elective options are listed below, or you can search for
additional options by reviewing
our current course descriptions. As
you consider courses, you may choose to take an elective in your
area of interest to prepare you for
your internship, or you can choose
to complete one of the additional core degree requirements. Keep in mind that:
- 57 Credits are needed to graduate (an average of 14.25
credits
per semester).
- STRATEGY 503: World Economy must be completed at some
time during your two years.
- Communication Requirement:
You must complete ONE of
the following two options:
- Complete any one of the following classes:
LHC 520, LHC 521, LHC 522, LHC 524 or LHC 560.
OR
- Pass the Communication Waiver Exam: Offered online in
August and November. You must successfully pass the
communication waiver exam during your first year; students
who do not successfully pass the waiver exam in their first year
will be required to fulfill the communication requirement via
coursework (see the above list of classes).
-
Communication Waiver Exam:: The online exam will open at
12:01 am on Monday, July 21 and will stay open until
11:59 pm on Monday, August 18.
- Law/Ethics Requirement: You must complete one of the following
courses during your two years:
- BA 512, LHC 504, LHC 506, LHC 507, LHC
508, LHC 509, LHC 511, LHC 512, LHC 513, LHC 514, LHC 515,
LHC 516, LHC 517 or LHC 582.
- You may elect 500-level and above
non-Business School courses at UM-Ann Arbor (up to a maximum of
10 credits throughout your MBA career). Courses from other
graduate programs are listed in the University Time Schedule (http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/schedule/).
