Apply Now

If you are passionate about exploring the intersection of the world of academic disciplines and the world of business practice, we invite you to consider applying to the Ross School of Business Doctoral Studies Program.

Forms and Application Checklist Ross Student

The Ross School of Business uses a self-managed application process. You are required to complete the information requested on all forms, obtain the supporting documents and submit the entire package online or in one large mailing envelope. We cannot accept faxed applications or credentials.

If you would like us to mail you a brochure and other program materials, e-mail us at umbusphd@umich.edu.

You must send application materials to the Ross School and the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

To guide you through the application process:

  1. Download the PhD Application Checklist. When you have completed each step on the checklist and made arrangements for test scores to be sent to us, your package is ready to submit.

  2. Download and complete the Ross PhD Departmental Information Form which must be submitted with your package.

  3. Go to the online application hosted by Embark.com. Directions within the application will guide you through the process.

Application Deadline

All supporting materials should be received by the application deadline of January 15.

Instructions provided by the Doctoral Program in Business Administration must be followed or failure to do so may result in the application and materials not being reviewed.

What happens after I submit my application?

  • Your application (and all supporting materials submitted with it) are downloaded from the online application system.

  • A file is started for your application.

  • A file is placed in processing area (files are processed in the order in which they are received. As the deadline approaches, there may be several hundred files ahead of you to be processed).

  • When your file is processed, the Doctoral Studies Office will check whether or not all required documentation has been submitted.

    • If all documentation has arrived, your file is complete and you will be sent an email from the Doctoral Stories Office telling you that your file is complete and when it will be sent to the advisor for your area of interest (e.g. accounting, marketing, etc.)

    • If your documentation has not arrived, your file is incomplete and you receive an email notifying you which documentation has not been received by our office. It is your responsibility to make sure we get all the required pieces. Your application will be held in the Doctoral Studies office until it is completed and not reviewed until that time.

  • Completed files are sent to faculty area advisors on at least a weekly basis (sometimes more often if volume of completed applications warrants this).

  • Files are reviewed by faculty.

  • If the faculty is interested in possibly admitting you, you are invited to UM for an interview when feasible or at the least, interviewed by phone (generally speaking – mid-Jan through mid-March).

  • Decision letters are sent out as soon as the Doctoral Studies Office is notified of the decision (generally mid-February through early April). The Doctoral Studies Office will not give out information relative to decisions either over the phone or by e-mail.

Financial Aid

The Ross School of Business provides merit-based financial aid to nearly all students in the doctoral program. We provide four years of full funding, which is contingent upon satisfactory progress in the program. A separate financial aid application is not required.

Current students typically receive fellowships ranging from $10,600-$11,000 per year and a year-round research assistantship that provides a full tuition waiver, health insurance and a stipend of approximately $10,800. Research assistantships, which typically demand 10-12 hours of work per week, are not just a source of financial assistance but the centerpiece of the program's mentorship philosophy. Students also are paid as graduate student instructors while they satisfy the program's teaching requirements.

We encourage students to apply for additional external sources of support when available. We also nominate students for University Fellowships when they are eligible.
