A Message From The Associate Dean

Dear Prospective Student,

Kathleen M. Sutcliffe, Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development

Welcome to the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. As a top-ranked business school operating within one of the world’s largest research universities, Ross offers you an unparalleled opportunity for multidisciplinary study and research. You will work side by side with faculty who are shaping their fields and the global business community with path-breaking research.

At the Ross School, no one paradigm dominates the research enterprise. Economic and behavioral models are equally valued, as are methodologies blending the two or incorporating innovations from other fields. This freedom enables faculty and doctoral candidates alike to take advantage of the rich breadth and depth of intellectual inquiry found throughout the University.

The Ph.D. Program prides itself on its diversity of scholars. We are a general management institution; consequently our eight areas are equally strong. We have doctoral students working in all disciplines. These individuals come from across the United States and around the world. The international composition of students and range of scholarship mimics the global business community of the 21st century and fosters highly creative problem solving.

It also is important to note that the Ross School has a full complement of computing and database resources. Four research institutes, dedicated to entrepreneurial studies, emerging and transition economies, global sustainability enterprise and operations management, provide further support and infrastructure, as do a number of other centers such as the center for international business education and the center for positive organizational scholarship.

Just as the multidisciplinary nature of the Ross School and the University of Michigan are defining characteristics of this institution, so too is the degree to which faculty and doctoral students collaborate. Our faculty regard Ph.D. students as colleagues. Our community is rewarding, intellectually, professionally and personally.

I invite you to apply to our Ph.D. Program and hope to welcome you as a colleague in the near future.

Best wishes,
Kathleen M. Sutcliffe
