Dual Degree Opportunities
The Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of
Michigan and the Urban and
Regional Planning Program through the Rackham School of Graduate Studies
offer a dual degree program that enables qualified students to pursue
concurrent work in business administration and urban and regional
planning, leading to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and
Master of Urban Planning (MUP) degrees.
Students can complete all requirements for both degrees within six
semesters of full-time study. Students registered in their first year of
either program may apply.
Students admitted to this dual degree program must satisfy the following
requirements:
1) MBA 57 credit hour degree program including:
- 45 Business Administration Credits, made up of:
- Roughly 30 credit hour MBA core (no credit is awarded for
Business Administration courses successfully waived; credit must be
earned with Business electives);
- Roughly 15 elective hours in Business Administration;
- MBA Communication Requirement.
- Up to12 credit hours of transferable electives from Urban and
Regional Planning.
2) MUP 48 credit hour degree program including:
- MUP core (minimum of 30 hours must be in graduate-level urban
planning courses and no more than 8 hours of which may be in individual
study-type courses);
- Minimum of 4 hours of electives outside the Program.
The total credit hours for the dual degree must be at least 84.
Each student must take at least 45 credits of Business School courses and at
least 30 credits of Urban and Regional Planning courses. Students normally
register one year entirely in one school and a second year entirely in the other
school. In the third year, students split registration and combine courses from
both schools. Students should see a counselor to determine an appropriate plan
of study.
Candidates interested in the dual program must file separate applications to be
admitted by both schools. Applicants must indicate on both applications that
they are applying for this specific dual degree program (please make sure the
correct box is checked on the MBA application). The application fee of $60 for
domestic students and $75 for international students must be paid to Rackham.
Please see below for a sample plan of this dual degree program.
