Global MBA
The Global MBA program is established to offer an opportunity for companies
to educate their elite managers in one of the world's top-rated MBA programs.
The Global MBA course work is exactly the same as the regular MBA but the schedule
and structure are creatively designed to accommodate the unique needs of each
the companies in each region. Currently UMBS offers Global MBA for the
companies based in or having operation in Asia.
HOW THE GLOBAL MBA PROGRAM WORKS
STEP 1. CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP
Companies interested in sponsoring employees in the program must submit
a Corporate Sponsorship Application via fax or email to establish a partnership.
For the Asia Global MBA, an electronic copy of the application form is available
at the download section of the East Asia Management Development Center (EAMDC)
web site (www.eamdc.bus.umich.edu). See the EAMDC link on the left. Only
individuals sponsored by a partner company are eligible to apply to the program.
STEP 2. STUDENT SELECTION
Once a company's application to join the program partnership is approved by the
School, the company nominates high-potential employees as candidates for the
program. The nominated candidates submit applications to the University
individually. The admissions requirements and procedures are the same as those
of the regular MBA program in Ann Arbor. After a thorough review of the
candidacy of the applicants, the University of Michigan Business School
Admissions Committee will notify the Sponsor Company of their admission
decision.
STEP 3. POWERFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Selected students join the program. The curriculum of the Global MBA program is
exactly the same as that of the regular MBA program in Ann Arbor. All courses
will be taught by the same distinguished University of Michigan Business School
faculty members that teach the regular MBA program in Ann Arbor.
STEP 4. MICHIGAN MBA DEGREE
Upon the successful completion of course work, team project, and other academic
requirements, participants attend a graduation ceremony in Ann Arbor and receive
a regular MBA degree from the University of Michigan Business School.
PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR SUCCESS
CUSTOM-MADE PROGRAM
The Global MBA Program is designed to accommodate the unique needs of business
environments and practices in each region where it is offered. For Asia, the
design is intensive - sixteen-and-one-half months - to minimize job absence of
talented employees. Additionally, students' stay in Ann Arbor is maximized to
provide ample opportunities for an enriched cultural experience with American
and other international students.
DYNAMIC PROGRAM DESIGN
The Global MBA Program for Asia consists of six sessions. In the first session,
students take Managerial Communications and quantitative core courses, which are
offered in Japan. In the second session, students move to Korea and continue
taking quantitative courses. The next three sessions are offered in Ann Arbor.
During the third session, students take non-quantitative core courses designed
to familiarize them with American classroom practices. During the fourth and
fifth sessions, students join the second-year Ann Arbor MBA students and take
elective courses of their choice. If they choose, students can take up to 10
credits in other units of the University. In the sixth session, student teams
are assigned to an in-company learning project called Multidisciplinary Action
Project (MAP).
SOLID COURSE SCHEDULE
COURSES
The courses offered in the GMBA program are exactly the same as those in the
regular MBA program, which requires 60 credit hours. The only difference is the
course structure. The GMBA Program for Asia is structured to accommodate the
unique needs of the Asian students and maximize the effectiveness of the
program.
MANAGERIAL COMMUNICATION (3 credits)
Managerial Communication, which is offered during the Japan and Korea session,
is designed to improve students' written and oral communication skills. It also
prepares students for rigorous class participation oriented MBA courses.
QUANTITATIVE CORE COURSES (12 credits)
Quantitative core courses, which are offered during the Japan & Korea session,
provide solid preparation in mathematical and statistical skills and methods for
advanced business studies.
NON-QUANTITATIVE CORE COURSES (10.5 credits)
In their first term in Ann Arbor, students will take non-quantitative core
courses requiring active classroom discussion. The knowledge and experience
students accumulate during the Japan and Korea sessions will help them more
easily adapt to a different teaching and learning approach in Ann Arbor.
ELECTIVE COURSES (27 credits)
Upon the successful completion of core courses, students join the 2nd year MBA
students and take elective courses in the fall and winter terms. Students are
required to take a minimum of 27 credits during these two terms. However,
students may take up to 36 credits without any additional tuition payment. In
addition, students may broaden their training by electing up to 10 credit hours
of graduate study in other units of the University.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY ACTION PROJECTS (7.5 credits)
Over a seven-week period, students are divided into small teams and assigned to
a real company with a specific challenge or problem of high-level, strategic
importance. During the project, students are coached and guided by a
multi-functional team of faculty advisors. Designed to be beneficial for both
students and project host companies, this experience teaches students how to
apply their knowledge, exercise their skills, and act effectively on their
ideas.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
In addition to taking MBA courses, students will be offered various
extracurricular activities, including cultural and corporate tours, seminars,
and workshops throughout the program.
