  Cello Virtuoso

ANN ARBOR, Mich.- Ross students possess many talents including leadership skills, teamwork experience, and analytical abilities. Ross students possess many other traits not necessarily attributed to their MBA studies. One such student is Hiroki Kobayashi of the Global MBA Class of 2009 and Toppan Printing Co., Ltd., whose great enthusiasm for music and cello, in particular, earned him an award and the opportunity to appear as a guest soloist with one of the University’s campus orchestras. There are three amateur orchestras on campus whose membership is open to non-music students and faculty, the Campus Symphony Orchestra, the Campus Philharmonic and the Life Sciences Orchestra. These groups are lead by graduate students of the world renowned conducting program at the University of Michigan School of Music, and membership is granted to players through a competitive audition each fall.

As the winner of the 2009 Eugene Bossart Concerto Competition Prize, Mr. Kobayashi was invited to appear as concerto soloist at the Campus Symphony Orchestra's 2009 Winter concert. The Eugene Bossart Prize is an endowed competition open to non-music majors at the University of Michigan. The Campus Symphony Orchestra is comprised of non-music majors and faculty with a passion and talent for performing orchestral music. It was established to allow them to continue their love of music on the University of Michigan campus. On Sunday, March 29, Mr. Kobayashi performed as soloist with the Campus Symphony Orchestra at Hill Auditorium performing the first movement of Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104. The cello concerto by Dvorak is known to be the most difficult and demanding work in the cello repertoire. Mr. Kobayashi delighted the audience with his expressive and virtuosic playing. Congratulations to Mr. Kobayashi!

Global MBA Student Receives Doctorate from the University of Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan - In August 2008, Hiroaki Tsutsui of the Global MBA Class of 2009 and the Fuji Xerox Company, received his doctorate degree from the University of Tokyo's School of Engineering. Mr. Tsutsui's research centered on a polymer that switches between colored and transparent states depending on its environment. This research is applicable for purposes of energy conservation. Mr. Tsutsui completed his master's program in Chemistry at the University of Tokyo in 1998 and immediately began working as a researcher with Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. With more than 20 patents on the technology which is used in applications such as sensors, displays, and energy-saving glass that automatically turns dark and absorbs heat from sunlight, Mr. Tsutsui published several journal articles regarding advanced materials which contributed to his doctorate degree. After completing exams in Ross' 2008 summer term, Mr. Tsutsui returned to Japan to meet with his PhD advisor, Professor Kazunori Kataoka, to officially accept this honor.
