Introduction: Management and Organizations PhD Program

The
Ph.D. Program in Management and Organizations trains scholars for careers as
researchers and teachers at premier academic institutions throughout the world.
Ph.D. students at Michigan thus have opportunities to work closely with social
scientists spanning a broad range of research areas and have access to
unparalleled resources for pursuing diverse scholarly interests.
Understanding individual, group and organizational behavior is critical to
modern business. The Management & Organizations (M&O) program brings a broad,
interdisciplinary perspective to the study of these issues. We engage in
theoretical work, field and laboratory research and archival studies, and
qualitative methods. We draw on various disciplines including psychology,
sociology, and economics, among others, to inform our work. Our research covers
micro- and macro-organizational theory as well as meso ideas which cut across
micro and macro.
Our
doctoral students collaborate closely with our world-class faculty. They also
have at their disposal the extraordinary resources of the University of Michigan
in the social sciences and other professional schools including public health,
natural resources, nursing, medicine, law, and education (where several of our
faculty members hold joint appointments). Michigan is also home to the nation’s
premier research institute: the Institute for Social Research (ISR). Students
are strongly encouraged to develop interdisciplinary interests that draw on
faculty from other parts of the university.
Interaction among scholars in these various departments is the norm. For
example, the Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies (ICOS) brings
together faculty and students from schools and departments across the University
for weekly seminars. The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social
Research (ICPSR), based at Michigan, offers summer methods institutes that our
students frequently attend.
M&O
Ph.D. students are highly integrated into the life of the department community.
They participate in our weekly brown bag lunch seminar, are actively involved in
the recruiting process for new students and faculty, have ample opportunity to
meet with visiting scholars from around the world, and are active in the Academy
of Management meetings each August.
