Electives Guide 

At Michigan, the Management & Organizations (M&O) area offers a range of critical courses for developing skills, knowledge and capabilities for high performance as organizational leaders and organizational members.  

Our MBA electives cluster into five areas:

Leading Change

Business Leadership in Changing Times (MO611, 1.5 credits): This course provides critical lessons from top managers about leading turnarounds and difficult change (Offered: Fall A, Fall B 2008; Winter A, Winter B 2009)

Navigating Change (MO603, 1.5 credits): This course offers frameworks and tools for leading organizational change (Offered: Fall A, Fall B 2008; Winter A, Winter B 2009)

Leading Creativity and Innovation (MO563, 1.5 credits) This course deals with practices necessary to stimulate and manage innovation (Offered: Fall A 2008)

Leading through Relationships

Bargaining and Influence Skills (MO512, 2.25 credits): This course teaches the theory of negotiations with hands-on practice and critical reflections (Offered: Fall A, Fall B 2008; Winter A, Winter B 2009; Spring, Summer 2009)

Managing Professional Relationships (MO615, 1.5 credits): This course offers skills for developing effective professional relationships within and across organizational boundaries (Offered: Winter A 2009)

Interpersonal Dynamics in Management (MO561, 3 credits): This course provides executive skills for developing superior performance in oneself and one’s colleagues and subordinates (Offered: Spring, Summer 2008; Fall 2009)

Leading Teams

Developing and Managing High Performing Teams (MO617, 1.5 credits): This course teaches practical approaches to recruiting, developing, & leading teams for high performance (Not offered 2009)

Leading with Human Capital

Leading and Leveraging Difference (M0605, 1.5 credits): This course examines the many facets of difference that influence individual, group and organizational performance and how to manage them (Offered: Winter A 2009)

Managing Rewards (MO562 3 credits): This course provides frameworks and tools for managing compensation in organizations (Not currently offered)

General Leadership

Leadership Development: Self-Awareness, Skills and Strategies (MO621, 3 credits): This course links self-assessment with assessment of situations to develop practical insights into leadership (Offered: Fall 2008; Winter A 2009)

Authentic Leadership (MO622, 1.5 credits): This course explores how to cultivate the skills, paradigms, and frameworks that enable authentic leadership.  (Offered: Winter B 2009)

Leadership Coaching Practicum (MO625, 3 credits): This unique, two-part course is designed to provide students with an unparalleled opportunity to develop cutting-edge skills to lead through  coaching (Offered:  Winter A, Winter B 2009)

Leading Not-For-Profit (MOXXX, 1.5 credits): This course develops the skills for leading effective capability-building in not-for profits. 

Our undergraduate elective offerings cluster into four groups. 

Leading Change 

Managing Change (MO314, 3 credits):  This course develops practical knowledge about planning, managing, evaluating, and surviving organizational change (Offered: Winter 2008) 

Strategic Management of Knowledge (MO470, 3 credits): The goal of this course is to study the unique characteristics of professional service firms, the context in which they compete, and the challenges they face (Offered: Winter 2009)

Leading Through Relationships

Teamwork in Organizations (MO317, 3 credits):  This course develops skills and conceptual understanding of how to participate in and lead high performing teams (Offered: Fall 2008)

Managing Interpersonal Relationships (MO324, 3 credits)  This course develops skills for developing effective professional relationships with and across organizational boundaries (Offered: Fall 2008) 

Leading with Human Capital 

Introduction to Managing Human Capital  (MO315, 3 credits):  This course builds on the theoretical framework developed in MO300 and emphasizes the personnel decisions to be made by the manager (Offered:  Winter 2008). 

General Leadership 

Leadership (MO321, 3 credits):  This course is designed to increase students' conceptual understanding of leadership in organizations. The course is highly experiential (Offered: Fall  2008).
